JOs Summer 2006 in CA recap

Great Lakes Water Polo (GLWP) sent two girls teams and 1 boys team out to the Junior Olympics this past summer. The boys games were held in the Pomona/Claremont area of Los Angeles. We combined half of our 16 and unders with a new club from Lansing (Capital Area Water Polo) and their group of 16s to form a combined club. The club had good success in that they bested the Rockford, Michigan club in their third game helping them to a 24th place finish. The 18 and under team had a tougher beginning but finished with two convincing victories over the Davis Ca club and Tualitin Hills (Portland, Oregon).

The girls then got the better break and were in the Ventura area of Southern California... so they were close enough to get to enjoy some beach time! The 18 and unders finished 32nd. They had a tough shootout loss and tie in their go-around. The 16s finished 39th and had a shootout victory over the Chicago Club Windy City.

All in all the kids had an enjoyable time and avoided the ungodly heat wave that seemed to engulf California for most of its summer. We were lucky to be in California when it actually had good weather! All signs are pointing towards a great summer of 2007 when Great Lakes WP hosts the largest USA Water Polo national championship here in Ann Arbor! Look for more information on the event and how to be a volunteer, coming soon!

Update: JOs Summer 2006

All positions on the U-18 Boys and Girls JOs teams are currently full. Two very competitive teams are going to represent Great Lakes in California. We are still looking to fill several spots on the U-16 Girls team, and there is a chance that we will enter a U-16 Boys team if the Zone receives another spot and we have enough interest. If you want to put your name on the Boys U-16 or Girls U-16 list, please email club president Stew Nelson as soon as possible.

As there may be a playoff for the U-18 Boys slot for the Zone, we will not have any information on flights until we are sure we can send a team to California. We will know more about this on June 14th. If a playoff is required, it will be in Chicago later this month. Information on the girl's flights will be announced as soon as our coaching staff can make their reservations.

We will have a meeting of JO's players and parents in late June or early July. Please stay posted for more information.

Tryout for Women's National Team May 21st at Jenison HS

The Women's Junior National Team is looking to fill spots in their initial training camp for 2006. "This is a great year to get into the National Team pipeline," said Women's National Team Head Coach Guy Baker. "There are a lot of opportunities available. If you make it to the June training camp, you will have a great opportunity to make it onto one of our National Teams."

If you have Olympic Dreams REGISTER NOW to attend one of our Open Tryouts (born in 1988 or earlier ONLY). The tryout will be held at Jenison High School on May 21st. You must register before May 5th and a $60 payment must be received by May 21st. At the Door registration will be $90.

Great Lakes Selected As Host For 2007 National Championships

USA Water Polo has selected GLWP as the host club for the 2007 National Junior Olympic Championships to be held July 28, 2007 to August 4, 2007, in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

The Junior Olympics are the largest competition held by USA Water Polo, with over 250 Age Group Teams, competing in 4 brackets. Over 4,000 athletes, coaches and officials from all over the United States will descend on the Ann Arbor area for eight days of competition.

"Hosting the Junior Olympics is a major honor for our club" said Club President Stewart Nelson. "USA Water Polo usually assigns host duties to a consortium of clubs in a region. Choosing Great Lakes shows the respect that the national water polo community has for our Club."

National Junior Olympic Trip

GLWP sent 50 athletes to California's Silicon Valley for the 2005 Junior Olympic Championships. The competition proved tough for our 16 and under teams, who suffered through a challenging tournament. All players gained valuable experience. Our 18 and under teams fared well, finishing 24th in the Men's Division and 24th in the Women's Division. Highlights of our trip included big wins for the Men over Central Valley and Mid Valley and a near upset of defending National Champion LA Water Polo (there were some stunned faces around the pool as our team trailed by only two goals at halftime). The women had a quality win against Oakland, but were bested by others in a tough draw.
